If you’re a fan of the Star Wars movies, then you might recognize this blue milk – otherwise known as Bantha milk, made into a delicious plant-based coconut milk treat.

On my blog, there is a variety of drinks ranging from all-natural plant-based milks , golden milk , magic color-changing lemonade , and now this completely plant-based version of “Bantha Milk.” However, rather than coming from a Star Wars galaxy creature or the Disney theme parks, this Galaxy’s Edge Blue Milk can be made at home with all-natural ingredients – with a sweet coconut milk result. It’s also a great treat for kids who love bright-colored foods. Not only is this treat great for any Star Wars fan, but it’s also a delicious afternoon treat or a fun addition to a garden party.

The ingredients

Ingredients for blue milk - 3
  • Coconut: Use fresh coconut flesh and water or bottled coconut milk.
  • Vanilla: Choose from a vanilla pod, vanilla powder , or extract.
  • Sweetener: I use Maple syrup.
  • Butterfly Pea Flowers: For the magical blue color.
  • Edible Lavender: Optional for a soothing floral scent.

How to make blue milk from Star Wars

Heat 1 cup of water and steep the butterfly pea flowers along with the lavender (which is optional). As they steep, they turn a gorgeous blue color—the longer you steep, the deeper the color.

Next, if using a whole coconut, you need to open it. First, carefully make 2-3 holes in the coconut to drain the water—I describe how to open a coconut here. Then open the coconut shell and collect the flesh (coconut meat).

If using a vanilla pod, scrape the seeds from half of it (or all of the seeds if you like a very pronounced vanilla flavor). This will help your milk take on a dessert-like taste and make for a wonderful treat.

Then, add the coconut flesh to a blender/food processor and blitz until it resembles crumbs. Then add the rest of the ingredients and blend until smooth. It can take a minute or two to thoroughly blend for creamy coconut milk. Finally, run your milk through a nut milk bag or sieve to collect any bits and the butterfly pea flowers.

Pour into a glass container of your choice (or straight into some cups, to serve) and enjoy fresh! You can also serve your blue milk over ice or even with homemade “boba” – AKA tapioca pearls to make homemade bubble milk tea.

You can keep this milk in the fridge for up to 3 days.
